Have You Ever Met A Chewing Enthusiast?

hipbookshadowYou might think that Jessica Porter is a little, umm… out there, I guess you might say. I think she is funny, smart and right on when it comes to nutrition. Jessica wrote the wildly popular book, “A Hip Chick’s Guide to Macrobiotics“. She knows how make healthy, delicious meals and appears to have a blast doing it. Here’s what she says about Macrobiotics.

jessica_porte3“The macrobiotic diet has gotten a bad rap for being restrictive and limiting when — paradoxically — it’s actually about freedom and expansion. You see, we need to eat good-quality food—most of the time—in order to live long, healthy, hip lives.”
~ Jessica Porter

Jessica also wrote 5 Steps for Macrobiotic Beginners for About.com. I think her five steps are a simple way for anyone to begin making healthier food choices.

  1. Eat Whole Grains
  2. Chew Well
  3. Give Up Dairy And Pick Up Sea Vegetable
  4. Try Natural Sweetners
  5. Be Patient With Yourself

Chewing your food isn’t easy. Especially if you have a long history of being a shoveler rather than a chewer, like me. I started making a conscious effort to chew  more on September 1st, and in the first week I noticed a big difference in the way I felt.  I was clicking around Jessica’s website and blog when I ran across her “Chewing Tutorial” video.  She’s a little nutty for sure, but if she wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t have watched it! So if you’ve never met a chewing enthusiast, prepare to salivate!

You might think chewing one bite of food for 100 times is crazy, but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. It seems that more and more people have digestive problems these days. So even if you only chew your food a few more times than usual or raise your awareness to how much you aren’t chewing after watching this video, that’s a start!

Don’t forget to check out Jessica’s website and blog at HipChicksMacrobiotics.com.

She offers online instruction and you can watch the first class for free! Intro to Macrobiotics

She also has an audio book available.

And she’s a hoot to follow on Twitter! @macrohipchick
